Orwell take the Gallowhill Trophy!
As the song goes what a difference a day makes. On the Thursday evening we had our annual match versus Abdie which is always a friendly good humoured match. This year it was Abdies turn to take the Quaich with a narrow 14-12 victory.
Friday saw our annual match versus Kinross which can also be good humoured and friendly but with a serious edge. The first session was played by Willie, Iain and George who all won to give Orwell the luxury of a 10 point lead to take into the second session. This was played by the rinks skipped by John, Jim and Sandy who were up against some very good Kinross rinks to the extent the 10 point cushion had diminished to 2 stones by the 7th ends. John and Sandy ran out of time, although Sandy had time to pull off several unfeasible shots against Sandy Nelson to keep a lead of 2 stones. Jim managed to play another end but had to fight off a stiff comeback from Ian Cormack who managed to get 2 stones sitting on the pot lid behind a real guddle of guards at the front. At this point the match would been peeled so Jim was left with no option but to attempt a strike through a very narrow port to lift at least one of the Kinross stones. He played his stone and it looked good until the point the draw took effect and it veered well clear of any chance of progress through the port despite the heroic sweeping efforts of Mike and David. As it looked as it was going to founder on the guards around the house there was one last chance. With no let up the sweepers kept the stone on its new trajectory which promoted a guard into the 4 foot which in turn pushed an Orwell stone into shot. There was no coming back from Kinross and thus the match finished 35 – 32 to Orwell.
George got the award of the highest up score on the night of 7-2, a welcome rehearsal from last year.
